  • Reduction of hyper pigmentation and age spots
  • Improvement in skin elasticity
  • Normalisation of oil production
  • Blemish correction
  • Treatment of active acne
  • Correction of acne scars
  • Improvement in the skin’s ability to hold moisture
  • Increase in the skin’s defence to external factors

How Obagi Blue Skin Peel Works

The active ingredient of the Obagi Blue Peel is trichloroacetic acid which is mixed with the patented blue base from Obagi. The peel is applied by a qualified medical professional based on the level of skin damage. This is a clinic based procedure and takes about half an hour. Typically it is applied to the face and neck. These are prescription strength products that work at the cellular level to improve and restore skin care function.

During the procedure a mild burning sensation occurs. This is transient, only lasting a few minutes. It is tolerable and does not require sedation. A bluish tint may be left on the treated area which generally washes off in 24 hours. Depending on the strength and depth of the peel used, mild swelling, redness and a sensation of tightness will be experienced in the 24 hours following the procedure. Within two to three days, the outer layers of your skin will begin to peel. This tends to continue over the next five to ten days. By the seventh to the tenth day, your skin should be healed and a visible improvement noticeable in your complexion. This appearance continues to improve over the next few weeks.

FAQ for Obagi Blue Peel

What is the difference between the Obagi products and over the counter purchased products?

Products bought over the counter at pharmacies or retail stores are known as cosmeceutical products. When applied, they do not penetrate the deeper layer of the skin (known as the dermis) and therefore have no effect on cellular function. Hence they do not correct skin cell damage but work on the superficial skin layer (the epidermis) which is mainly composed of dead cells. Thus cosmeceutical products “mask” the damaged skin on the surface temporarily without addressing the causative factors.

Can these products and chemical peels be used during pregnancy?

Tretinoin and hydroquinone (ingredients incorporated into these products) are rated as Category C for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding and therefore should not be used.

What happens when the use of the products is stopped?

The skin is a dynamic living organ which is constantly in the process of renewal. As skin cells mature, they migrate to the surface and remain there as dead cells before sloughing off. This is approximately a thirty-five day cycle. If the use of these products is stopped, the healthy renewal process will be stalled and eventually cells will revert to pre skin care treatment status. The diminishing results are generally seen within weeks of ceasing the products.

Why is it recommended that I use all the products in the Obagi system?

The Obagi system is designed specifically to act as a unit and effectively address and treat concurrent skin problems and their causes. When used together, the products complement each other to effectively balance the pH level so that the active ingredients can penetrate the layer (dermis) needing treatment.

Is it absolutely necessary to use the Obagi Nu-Derm products in conjunction with the Obagi Blue Peel?

Yes. Patients seeking Obagi Blue Peel treatment generally have some form of damage or unhealthy skin. It is imperative that skin cell function is uniformly improved prior to the procedure. This will ensure that the maximum and safest result is obtained from the peel. Also, post-procedure care is enhances and down-time is reduced. Furthermore, post-procedure variables such as inflammation, hypersensitivity, post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation, erythema and scarring are reduced.

How long should the Obagi skin care products be used prior to the undergoing the blue peel?

This is variable depending on the skin type and the main problem being treated. A minimum pre-condition program lasts six weeks. Skin with more severe pathology may require twelve to eighteen weeks.
